Voltage Drop Calculator

The longer the extension cord, the lower the voltage the cable is able to deliver.  This means that for longer cable runs you must use a lower gauge (larger wire) in order to get the necessary power where you need it.

Cables that are too small tend to overheat, creating a potential fire danger, as well as further reducing the available current at the end of the cord where power is needed.
